Understanding ADHD Treatment

Growing up without professional treatment and continuing to live with the untreated condition as an adult will only cause more issues. We can provide the necessary combination of therapy and medication to help patients live a fulfilling life without the condition constantly ruining it.

If you are struggling with ADHD, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or similar symptoms, then give us a call to begin the treatment process toward a brighter future.

One major issue for patients of any age struggling with ADHD is the fact that many people will assume the patient merely has trouble focusing on a specific task. Some people doubt the condition symptoms are an actual issue. ADHD is not only a real condition, but it affects much more than just the ability to pay attention.

ADHD can affect an individual’s brain and behavior functions such as:

  • Attention
  • Concentration
  • Organization
  • Memory
  • Motivation and effort
  • Impulsiveness
  • Hyperactivity
  • Learning from mistakes
  • Social skills

  • Each patient can have their own issues with ADHD affecting a few of these conditions. On top of that, many people falsely believe that ADHD only applies to children. ADHD will continue throughout one’s life, which is why it is crucial to seek treatment that finds effective methods for working through the symptoms.

    Benefits of ADHD

Our ADHD treatment will focus on helping the patient build healthy coping techniques while learning how to identify and avoid negative behaviors of the condition. While some people may attempt to self-medicate or argue they do not need treatment, ADHD treatment has a range of styles that will accommodate a patient’s needs. Benefits of ADHD treatment include:

  • Learning effective methods for working through the symptoms of ADHD
  • Finding an effective medication for treatment, when necessary
  • Building and enacting effective coping techniques on one’s own
  • Building a network of support with people who can help
  • Learning how to work through the symptoms to find success at school or work
  • Learning how to navigate social situations with necessary social skills
  • Learning to identify more productive and appropriate behaviors
  • Identifying the Sign of ADHD

As stated above, ADHD is much more than a noticeable difficulty focusing. As with many mental illnesses, people may not immediately identify the symptoms without professional guidance. With a psychiatric evaluation, we can identify the behaviors and signs of ADHD. The evaluation will look at two main categories of behavior, inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Within each category, we will look for regular patterns of behaviors that interfere with functioning or development. Some of the signs of ADHD that the DSM-5 lists include but are not limited to:

  • Difficulty giving close attention to details at work
  • Difficulty following through on instructions with work or other responsibilities
  • Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
  • Frequently avoids or shows reluctance to tasks requiring mental effort for a long period of time
  • Regular fidgeting, tapping hands/feet or squirms in seat
  • Difficulty partaking in leisurely activities or slowing down quietly
  • Regular interrupting or intruding on other people in a conversation
  • Frequently seems on the go or always busy

  • These are only a few of the possible signs of ADHD. Children will need to display at least six signs in the inattention and hyperactivity categories while displaying consistent symptoms for a t least six months. Adults will only need five in each category to meet the requirements of an ADHD diagnosis.

    Treatment is a Process

Treatment for any mental illness is a process that can take months or years. In many cases, people will continue the same basic treatment for several years. We will only recommend the treatment as it is necessary. This does not mean that a patient will never stop treatment, rather that we will help them learn the coping techniques so treatment is no longer necessary.

An important component of treatment is that we take the time to listen to the patient. We will take in all or your needs and concerns when customizing the treatment. We will also go over all of the steps with you and answer any questions you might have. The first step is to call us and schedule an evaluation. We will help you begin the healing process toward a brighter future.
